Computers for Nigerian schools
« on: September 20, 2006, 06:08:50 PM »
Nigeria NEEDs to  make  provision for children to get online.

Instead of wasteing Millions on useless arms..they should

divert funds, into buying computers for the schools.

If other countries are able to do this, what is stopping

Nigeria from educating Her citizens?  Nigeria needs to step

up and move forward. There are so many children out

there that have the brains, but just do not have facility

to advance in their studies.  Children love to learn.

A small child loves anything visual with movement. This

is one of the reasons why children learn fast on computers.

Can you Imagine a young boy abroad has set up a website

teaching adults how to play games? And he charges 15

per lesson. My point is..why is Nigeria holding our children

back? So many of these children have good ideas, which

will never be tapped. All because Nigeria cannot be bothered.

The big companies can sponsor and provide funds..this is

good advertising for them.  When you see how people

can go shopping and collect school vouchers towards, getting

a computer for the local school, it makes me wonder, why

Nigeria cannot put such a plan into action. There are enough

wealthy companies able to support this.

PLEASE HELP OUR CHILDREN HAVE A BETTER FUTURE

I think Microsoft pioneered a scheme of recent tagged every child with a laptop.
This will cost less than $100 and can be powered by solar. So that it could be use in the most remote area in the world.
However, there are so many companies  out there where one can get free computer or laptops for charity but you will have to foot the shipment, Trust me if they clearly marked for Charities, when your consignments get to Nigeria they will still expect you to pay huge duties so our Government are not helping.

ADVERTISEMENT Nigeria has officially ordered and paid for one million of the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) devices, according to the Nigerian Vanguard newspaper.

The deal is the first actual order for the project that aims to provide Linux-powered laptops to children in developing economies.

Production of the devices will start once five to 10 million have been ordered and paid for, according to the OLPC website.

OLPC deals directly with governments in China, India, Brazil, Argentina, Egypt, Nigeria and Thailand. Other nations are said to be close to placing orders.

The computer is commonly referred to as the $100 laptop, but the first units are likely to cost around $140.

The laptops are designed for children and are 'ruggedised' to allow them to operate in dusty environments.

Using a central server and internet connection in a school, children will be able to go online from home through a mesh network. The laptops include a hand crank to charge the battery when away from a power connection.

The laptop is powered by an AMD processor and runs the Linux operating system.

Intel launched a competing $400 Eduwise laptop earlier this year. Both Intel and Microsoft have criticised the OLPC project.

Intel chairman Craig Barrett dismissed the project as a "$100 gadget ", and Microsoft chairman Bill Gates criticised the small screen and hand crank.

A video demonstration of the first working OLPC prototype is available on the Silicon Valley Sleuth blog.

You raised a very good point. All children world wide will grow to become the next generation of Leaders and workers.
My fear is, if they are not given the tools today to assist them in learning, what kind of future do they have?
I hope the children in Nigeria will soon receive their laptops.
Even then, this is only a small number that will get a laptop.
I hope one day each school will make provision so the children
can at least use a computer in school. That will be a Giant Step
forward.
