Yoruba Proverbs

1 A man who pays respect to great persons paves the way for his own greatness.

2 The lizard says that it knows the movement of the persons who wants to stone it.

3 A woman who is pleasant to look at may not be too good in the house.

4 The preying-mantises do not wait when the forest is on fire.

5 How he that calls another a thief in a marketplace reconvene the market to say what he said was not true?

6 No one waits for the street to be deserted before polluting the air.

7 The insect that destroys the leaf lives inside the leaf.

8 If the road a man follows does not lead him to where he is going, it must surely lead him back to where he was coming from.

9 A man standing on a shaky one leg certainly cannot carry another on his back.

10 If you don't learn to laugh at trouble, you will have nothing to laugh at in your old age

The Yoruba people have many many proverbs which
we apply to our daily lives.
Many may need you to sit and ponder, while others
you will grasp the meaning of immediately.

1 A good product needs no hard sale.

2 Whatever the kind of music that plays in the home of a rich
man there is always someone to dance to it.

3 Because one finds himself in the middle of the river does not entitle him to call the crocodile his father.

4 A man who pays respect to great persons paves the way for his own greatness.

7 An old woman is always uneasy when dry bones are mentioned in a proverb.
