Yoruba God Aganju
« on: February 12, 2007, 01:08:46 AM »

Aganju is most often referred to as the Volcano. He controls his mother, the Dread Fire, Oro Ainu. He is also the Orixa of untamed lands, from desert to mountains, and he is the brother/husband of Iyemaja and considered by many to be the father of most of the Orixa. He is most assuredly the father of Xango, although Xango was raised by Oxala.

Aganju, like Olokun, is fabulously wealthy. As Lord of Caves he owns all the mineral wealth of the earth and can be appealed to to part with some.

He is also the navigator, knowing the safe passages and fords across the river. That is one of the reasons the followers of Santeria equate him with St. Christopher. Like St. Christopher, he will dance at a Bembe with little children on his shoulders if there are any present.

Once the King, his drunkenness led to his dethronement by his son Xango. There are some conflicting ideas in the stories as to whether he was deposed or abdicated. Since he never fights with Xango, my guess is he abdicated.

Mediums carrying Aganju may well try and eat glass. It's one of his favorite tricks. Watch out for that. He also likes to jump, so if there's a ceiling, make sure he's aware of it so he doesn't break the horse's head.

He will be immediately calmed by either Iemanja or Oxum if he becomes too animated, which he may well do. His possession can be very rowdy unless the navigator path comes down.

Ileke

Patterns of nine beads: two brown, one red, one yellow, one blue, one yellow, one red, two brown is one pattern.

Offerings

Beer (and lots of it) and beef. Watch out he doesn't try and eat the beer bottles.

Colors and Day of the Week

Earth colors with blue. We work with him on Thursday along with his son, Xango.

Aganju's Children

They are strong, boisterous and love to drink and party, but they make devoted fathers and satisfying lovers. Alchoholism is a common problem for his children, as is a tendency to quit a job when it interferes with their drinking. They are also prone to strangulation/breathing problems.

If they're sober, they're very steady. They make excellent guides and their advice is always profound and worth seeking. They often have problems in their middle years adjusting to the slower pace of old age. Even if they don't drink, they never lose their love of a good party.

Even though their work history may be rocky, they never seem to have any problem making a decent salary. Their father provides well, and they are not afraid of hard work (as long as it doesn't cut into their partying).
