Yoruba God Olokun
« on: February 12, 2007, 01:43:16 AM »

Olokun

Olokun is the predominant Orixa in Benin, where he is the Orixa of the Sea.  Here in the western hemisphere, he is the Orixa of the Deep, of the part of the Ocean the light never reaches.

Fabulously wealthy (everything rolls downhill), he is often invoked for money.  In Benin he is invoked for fertility.  He has a wife, which in some houses is equated with Iemanja.  In many of the houses in the Carribean, he is feared and placated as the fisherman's terror of death at sea.

Generally kindly disposed toward people, he is a valuable ally because his power matches his wealth.  Since the Ocean covers more than half of the planet's surface, Olokun can be called everywhere.  Even the great plains of North America and the peaks of the Himalayan mountains were once in the domain of Olokun.  He is notoriously vain, and catering to his vanity can produce spectacular results.

 Ileke

In Benin, red coral is used.  Here dark gemstones, particularly opals, seem to be favored by him.

 Offerings

Most anything.  He gets everything eventually anyway.

Colors and Day of the Week

Red coral, opals, the expense seems to be more imporant to him than the actual color..  We work with him on Saturday.

 Olokun's Children

With their father's vanity comes a taste for exquisite things.  They are "house proud" and will build a palace if they can afford it (especially if they have servents to keep it tidy)..  Money comes easily to them and they are generally financially comfortable, if not downright well off.

They are strong willed and disinclined to compromise.  They exude an aura of power.  Like their father, they are exceedingly generous, buying expensive gifts for their friends.  An Olokun child who is not in touch with him can be very stingy.

In Benin it is said that Olokun only chooses the most beautiful women to be his priestesses.  His children tend to be phsically attractive.  Even if you are not his child you can count on special protection from Olokun if you are physically beautiful.
