In Exodus 19:25 and 20:1 to 3 , So Moses went down unto the people, and spake unto them. And God spake all these words , saying, I am the LORD thy God , which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt , out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. So Moses brings the ten commandments on stone tablets to give to the children of Israel , the law of God. The first given concerns how we treat God with having no other gods before the true God. Now even though their are othes gods that are called God there is only one true and living God that created the heavens and the earth and mankind on it and all things. And since this is so God wants us not to have other gods before him. Now other gods could not only be a name of another god but also a person or a thing or some other object such as money or pleasure. Although this doesnt mean all these things are necessarily wrong in and of themselves but if we make an idol out of them in our hearts and put them before God it then becomes a sin.
