People, including policemen who gathered at the Lagos State police command headquarters, Ikeja, recently, could not control their emotions as a man narrated how he and his wife conspired to throw a seven-year-old girl into the lagoon.

The man, who gave his name as Idowu Adeyinka, confessed telling his wife, Safiatu, that the only condition for continuing living with her as his wife was to kill the child.

Giving a graphic account of why and how the seven-year old Wunmi was thrown into the lagoon, Adeyinka said: “I got married to my wife 15 years ago.

She had a child for me but I was shocked one day when she bade me goodbye without any provocation. I was hoping that she would come back home, but I was devastated when she got married to another man. I forgot about her”.
He revealed that few years later, his wife returned home. He said: “I wanted to throw her out, but my sister begged that I should pardon her, which I did, but she came back with Wunmi , a child by another man.

“I was not happy seeing her(Wunmi) in my house. I was not happy with her because of the pains the father inflicted on me. Moreso, she was always in her mother’s company, day and night. I did not have the chance of making love to my wife. So, I gave my wife the condition that except she returned Wunmi to her father, I would not accept her as my wife.”

“It was then that we decided that the only option was for Wunmi to die. We took her to the Third Mainland bridge and threw her into the lagoon.”

On how he felt throwing human being into the lagoon, he said: “I felt bad, but I had no other alternative because each time I saw her (Wunmi), it reminds me of my misery.”

However, his wife denied taking part in Wunmi’s death. She said: “All he said was that I left him for another man which is true. I later came back and I had Wunmi for another man. What is not true is that I knew he was going to kill my daughter. In fact, I carried her pregnancy for nine months so, it won’t be possible for me to kill a grown-up daughter of mine.”

Safiatu explained that her husband actually warned her to return Wunmi to her father, adding that when she considered his wickedness, she decided to make an alternative arrangement.
She said: “While I was making arrangements on where to take her, my husband killed her.”

“I swear to God, I did not have hands in the death of Wunmi. I came back from the market and didn’t see her, so, I told him that we should report to the police but he refused. Few days later, I narrated my ordeal to a neighbour who accompanied me to a police station in Ikotun, where I reported the case.
“My husband was arrested.
He is just trying to rope me in, so that I can suffer the same fate with him.”
However, the state police spokesman, Frank Mba, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, who described the couple as wicked and shameless, said they would be charged to court for conspiracy and murder, adding: “We are still searching for the corpse of the deceased.”

The man is not well upstairs.
He should be sectioned and jailed for life.
